Why Outdoor Experiences Matter

At Winter4Kids, the mountain is more than a place to ski. It is a place where young people discover confidence, independence, resilience, and possibility.

Every winter, youth from across New Jersey travel to Winter4Kids to participate in programs designed to remove barriers and create access to outdoor experiences many families could not otherwise afford.

More than 30% of our participants come from Essex County, primarily Newark, and 77% of the youth we serve come from low-income families.

For many students, arriving at Winter4Kids is their very first experience in the outdoors beyond their immediate neighborhood or school environment. Many have never seen a ski mountain, ridden a chairlift, or participated in organized outdoor recreation.

These experiences matter more than most people realize.

Outdoor experiences provide opportunities for young people to challenge themselves in ways that are increasingly rare in everyday life. On the mountain, students learn how to navigate uncertainty, overcome fear, solve problems, and persist through challenges. They begin to understand that falling is part of learning and that progress comes through resilience and effort.

We watch students arrive unsure of themselves and leave believing they are capable of more than they thought possible.

For youth growing up in communities where access to enrichment opportunities, outdoor recreation, mentorship, and safe spaces can be limited, these experiences can be transformational.

Research continues to show that outdoor activity supports mental health, emotional regulation, confidence, physical wellness, and social connection. But beyond the research, we see the impact firsthand every day:

  • Students encouraging one another after difficult runs

  • Young people learning independence and responsibility

  • Friendships forming across schools and communities

  • Participants discovering confidence that extends into the classroom and everyday life

What happens at Winter4Kids goes far beyond skiing.

The mountain becomes a place where young people can take healthy risks, disconnect from daily stressors, and experience success in an entirely new environment. It becomes a place where they feel supported, challenged, and valued.

Through our programs, students develop the skills to R.I.S.E. through:

  • Resilience

  • Inclusivity

  • Support

  • Empowerment

Since opening, Winter4Kids has served more than 20,000 youth through programs focused on access, opportunity, and long-term development.

Every participant who steps onto the mountain represents more than a lesson or a visit. They represent potential, possibility, and the opportunity to discover what they are capable of achieving when barriers are removed and support is provided.

That is why this work matters.
